The Annual Photographers' Masterclass took place in Nairobi, Kenya from 24 - 29 September. Curators Simon Njami, John Fleetwood, Katrin Peters-Klaphake, Akinbode Akinbiyi and Frédérique Chapuis worked with a group of 12 photographers from sub-Sahara Africa.

It was the tenth edition of the the Masterclass, initiated by the Goethe-Institut South Africa and Simon Njami in 2008. It has been taking place annually as a closed portfolio reading for young Sub-Saharan African photographers. It is a forum for practitioners to meet with curators both from this region and further afield.

The 2017 edition of the Photographers' Portfolio Meeting took place in Nairobi, Kenya. The participating photographers came from DRC, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, South Africa, Sudan and Uganda/Kenya. They were able to critically engage with their own and others’ work and strengthen African photographer networks.

Jansen van Staden, Cape Town and Moss Moeng, Johannesburg, were some of the new nomination to the group.
