Call for Photography Writers in Southern Africa: CLOSED

Call for Photography Writers in Southern Africa

Deadline: 8 August 2018

Photo: is compiling a database of writers from Southern Africa. As a platform for the promotion of photography work, Photo: wants to help develop the practice of writing about photography in the region, today. The platform wants to promote collaborative partnerships between democraSEE award recipients, finalists and selected writers for the database.

Writers who are interested, and/or have experience in writing about photography, are encouraged to submit writing samples to Photo: by 8 August 2018.

democraSEE is an award and mentorship platform to develop and show important contemporary photography stories and content from the Southern African region that deal with social and political issues and imaginaries. It wants to create a space to acknowledge photographers and photography’s role and position in relation to the world. Furthermore, it aims to support the growth of visual languages in photography.

democraSEE was launched in 2017 and, since then, Georges Senga (DRC), Jody Brand (South Africa) and Mauro Vombe (Mozambique) have been announced as democraSEE 1, 2 and 3 recipients.

Photography writers can play a critical role in helping to challenge and broaden photographers’ understanding of their own work. Photo: wants to support these collaborative processes by providing a platform for critical and relevant conversations on photography between practicing writers and photographers based in Southern Africa, today.

Submissions are accepted from writers based in the following countries, only: Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Comoros, DRC, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Please submit a PDF of a writing sample no longer than 500 words. Creative writing samples, academic samples, blog entries, published writing and experimental samples are accepted.
