The jury, chaired by John Fleetwood of Photo:, South Africa further consisted of Anna Zekria of Salt Images, Russia; Chris Rijksen of the Transketeers, The Netherlands; Sujong Song of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, South Korea and Tanner Curtis of The New York Times, USA. The selected this image from 3,800 entries sent in by 409 photographers of 65 different nationalities.

The jury said that “The entries and the winning images are an intersection between contemporary culture and gender and sexual issues, showing that gender is not a singular narrow issue but how it intersects with economy, power dynamics and safety. It was interesting to see a mix of stories, both in reference to and independent of heteronormative narratives in thoughtful, creative and sometimes very fun ways.

We were overwhelmed in a good way by the amount of submissions that did not limit themselves to traditional ways of expression. A breath of fresh air to see works from all around the world, from Asia to Latin America to Africa, a very diverse geography of entries.

We encourage photographers to tell personal stories. In this contest, many were. While we selected the ones that were strongest and most successful in how they told the story, many did have great emotional impact and we will all carry many of these stories with us. Sharing these stories and exposing yourself in this way is courageous. We want to thank everyone for sharing and encourage everyone to keep improving and enter again in the next edition.”
