The Annual Photographers’ Masterclass, Johannesburg

The annual Photographers’ Masterclass took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, 3-9 September. Curators Simon Njami, John Fleetwood, Katrin Peters-Klaphake, Akinbode Akinbiyi and Frédérique Chapuis, worked with a group of 11 photographers from sub-Sahara Africa. This was the 11th and final edition of the masterclass, initiated by Simon Njami and Goethe Institut in 2008. The Annual Photographers’ Masterclass is a closed portfolio meeting for photographers from sub-Sahara South Africa to show their work and receive critical feedback from the curators and their peers, to help strengthen their practice and continue to build networks between African photographers. The 2018 Annual Photographers’ Masterclass included participants from DRC, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, South Africa, Sudan, Uganda, Nigeria and Kenya.
