The democraSEE workshop is a two-week photography encounter in Maputo to encourage photography stories and discussions on issues relating to how we understand our changing world and changes within photography. These workshops will be conducted by John Fleetwood, photography educator, curator and Photo: director, with Mauro Vombe, Mozambican photographer.

Presented by Photo:, the Goethe-Institut, Centro Cultural Moçambicano-Alemão, and local collaborators, this workshop brings together photographers concerned with issues that have an impact on our human and social rights and how photography practice can build response to this. 

Participants who are interested in sharing, developing and improving their existing or new photography stories are encouraged to apply. The workshop will seek to develop visual languages and content that opens conversations about issues of representation, positionality and visibilities. This project will also reflect on the ways in which these concerns have been impacted upon in relation to the global Covid-19 pandemic. The workshop will additionally look at ways in which photography can engage with the public.  

The democraSEE workshop in Maputo is part of a series of workshops across the African continent, which consider social, political, environmental and identity concerns through photography. These workshops stem from the democraSEE award and mentorship platform initiated by Photo: (Johannesburg, South Africa)

Strict Covid-19 protocol will be followed, including the use of mandatory face masks, adherence to social distancing and hand-sanitizing.

Dates of workshop: 23 November – 4 December 2020

Venue: Centro Cultural Moçambicano-Alemão, Av. Samora Machel, N.468, Maputo, Mozambique

The workshop is free of charge.

The cost of transport and accommodation (if necessary) is the responsibility of the participant.

Photographers must have access to their own digital camera and computer for the duration of the workshop

(Note: Due to the developing circumstances surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, these dates are subject to change or postponement)

Criteria for application:

Any photographer, artist or practitioner working with photography based in Mozambique may apply.

In preparation, applicants must :
• Fill in the application on the Photo: website, below

Once an applicant has received email confirmation and submission instructions from Photo:, they will be required to submit:
• A CV or Resumé (not more than 2 pages)
• Copy of ID or passport 

• 1 to 2 bodies of photography work, maximum of 20 images, (suggest 10 images per project) in .jpg (JPEG) format, low resolution (72 dpi, length of longest side max 40 cm).

• 150-300 word written description for the abovementioned photography work

 Selected applicants will be informed by the organizers in the first week of November 2020.

 The applicant grants Photo: the right to use the application data for all media, publicity and marketing of the democraSEE workshops.
