‘?’

Curated by John Fleetwood

Date: 04 Dec 2020

Time: 17h00

Venue:  Centro Cultural Moçambicano-Alemão Goethe-Zentrum Maputo. AV. Samora Machel n.468

What we see as photographs are small parts of a larger reality. By removing these cuts from reality to function as an image, we remove their context. Perhaps we can think of it as a way to ask new questions. Once removed from its reality, we start to wonder about the image’s context, what happened when the photograph was made? Where does this image come from? In fact, photographs can be seen as questions about what they present.

This exhibition includes the work of the participants of the 10-day democraSEE MAPUTO photography workshop, conducted by John Fleetwood, a South African based curator, with Mozambican photographer Mauro Vombe.

The workshop looked at visibilities, invisibilities and erasures that are part of any process of making images, and how these in/visibilities position photographers and their work in the context of larger socio-political discussions of our times

Participating photographers for democraSEE Maputo are:

David Aguacheiro

Januário Magaia

Lillian Benny

Ouri Pota

Thandi Pinto

Tina Krüger

Vladimir de Sousa
