10:10 Archive — Open Call
Phumzile Khanyile, "Nomvo is the only image named in the work. Nomvo is the name of my grandmother"
Photo: presents 10:10, an online workshop and collaborative platform. We invite South African photographers to submit projects engaging with the photographic archive.
Get feedback and share.
We are interested in work that asks how archives can inspire new image-making, how photographers navigate and pay tribute to their sources, and how archival material shifts in meaning across different historical moments and contexts. We also welcome emerging photographers who are working with or through archives as part of developing their own practice.
We are seeking photography practices that explore what a photographic archive is and what it can be — collections of prints and negatives, family albums, documentary repositories, digital folders, institutional records, and the spaces in between. We are also open to work that engages with broader material culture archives — objects, documents, ephemera — where photography remains the primary lens through which that material is approached and transformed.
Among the questions animating this session: What is the difference between a collection and a photographic archive? How do you make new work from inherited images? What do we owe to the sources we draw from? How does an archive speak differently across time?
The online workshop takes place on 17 June 2026.
Applications open: 13 May 2026 Deadline: 22 May 2026
10:10 takes a presentation and feedback format where 10 photographers are given no more than ten minutes to present their work. Presentations are then followed by 15 minutes of feedback from peers and invited respondents. Invited respondents are industry professionals: practitioners, curators, theorists etc.
This edition is open to South African photographers. We're looking for voices that resonate across disciplines and practices, especially those grounded in the complexity and richness of South African visual culture.
